New Policies for Admission to the Rehabilitation Sciences Programs Effective 2001.

The following changes apply to:

Physical Therapy

Occupational Therapy

Communication Sciences and Disorders

The Rehabilitation Sciences Program at the Medical University of South Carolina has changed some of the admissions policies. Effective immediately there will no longer be an application deadline. Instead, applications will be accepted year-round with a rolling admissions process. Qualified applicants will be offered positions in the class as space allows. Applicants will not be required to interview as part of the admissions process. Applicants are encouraged to apply no later than November - January for the class that would matriculate the following May. An Orientation Day will be held for accepted applicants to allow them to tour the campus, meet with faculty and students, and receive information regarding financial aid and off-campus housing.

The other admissions policies have not changed. A bachelor degree is not required for admission. Students may apply to the program prior to completing all of the 90 semester hours of prerequisite courses but must complete all prerequisites prior to matriculation. Students must complete 16 semester hours of the specific science prerequisites (physics, chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology) prior to application. GRE scores, including the writing assessment, must be submitted. Applicants are highly encouraged to complete a minimum of 100 hours of Physical Therapy specific volunteer or work experience. Applications may be obtained through Enrollment Services at (843) 792-3281 or may be downloaded at:

The GRE writing assessment in addition to the general GRE exam is required.

A course in medical terminology is also required.

MUSC prefers on-line application to their programs.

The minimum number of observation hours was changed from no suggested minimum to 100 hours minimum. At least 50 of those hours must be with a single clinician.

The standardized test has been changed from either the SAT or GRE to only the GRE. You must take the GRE for PT and other master's level entry programs at MUSC. The GRE must be taken far enough in advance of the application deadline to ensure that the scores are received by MUSC prior to that deadline.
